Jesus and Politics

It’s been incredibly challenging to keep my mouth shut this election season. But as I have kept my mouth shut - I’ve asked myself, why?

And the honest answer to that question is because I have always been told it’s not wise to talk about politics as a pastor. Because when you talk about politics, it does not matter how rational and logical you are. It doesn’t matter how kind your delivery is, you’re going to offend someone.

But as I sit here and scroll through Facebook - I’m so burdened and troubled by what I see American Christianity has turned into.

So I wanted to make this post to say a few things that will most certainly “stir the pot” but I think this is a pot that needs to be stirred.

Here’s my assessment:

1. What party you vote for doesn’t determine whether you’re a “real Christian” or not.

We have no record of Jesus being affiliated with any political organization.

And we most certainly don’t have any record of him backing a political candidate to the point where he was willing to sever life long friendships, relationships and family members if they didn’t support him too.

If you vote democrat - you’re welcomed at Bethel Assembly of God Community and I promise you you won’t be made to feel like the Antichrist. I don’t agree with all of your politics - but I promise we will love you and treat you the same way we’d like to be treated. (That is the golden rule, right?)

Jesus came to establish his father’s government- a heavenly government within the hearts of each and every one of us. Not an earthly one until he returns.

Jesus never once attempted to gain political influence as means to further his message or bring glory to His father.

He sat with people and showed them he genuinely loved them and cared for them. His heart BURNED with compassion for the people that today, modern Christians point their fingers at and judge. He sought to restore those that the religious elites wanted to stone.

2. Comparing a political candidate to Jesus Christ, the apostles, and early church fathers is not cutesy, not mindful, and totally not demure.

3. Christians using their Facebook as a soapbox to showcase their righteous indignation in regards to their politics are absolutely annihilating their witness.

You can’t get on your Facebook and call people “demon-crats” and “baby killers” and then expect them to listen to you talk to them about a God that loves them and cares about them.

Christians.

Stop dying on hills that Jesus would’ve never even climbed.

Preach the word.
Live the Word
Love people.
Repeat.
